How come rice price up in FairPrice?

33-year-old STOMPer Lok was surprised to see the price tags on this bag of rice at an NTUC FairPrice outlet at Hougang Point yesterday (1 July 2007).

The STOMPer was observing NTUC staff busy tagging the goods with new prices at the time of this incident.

One of the goods being tagged was the bag of rice, which showed a 2% increase in price (from $8.50 to $8.66).

Lok went on to say that 'almost 90%' of the goods sold in the NTUC FairPrice outlet have their prices marked up by 2%, equivalent to the GST hike.

The confused STOMPer wonders why this is so, when NTUC announced earlier this year that it would absorb the GST hike.

When Lok probed the staff who were in charge of price-tagging the goods for more information, they said that all they were told by their management was that the 'new prices' would have to be displayed by 12 am. this morning.
